What to bring to a buggy safari in Side: the bag, not the clothes

Bring ID if you plan to drive, a little cash for what is sold at the base, and a towel with a change of clothes for the showers. The helmet, the vehicle, the briefings and the round-trip hotel transfer are already in the fare, so none of that belongs in your bag. What to wear has its own page; this one is the bag.

The short list, and why most of it is for afterwards

Everything here fits in a small day bag, and hardly any of it is for the driving. Approximately 4–4.5 hours pass door to door, with an 18 km off-road route through dust, mud and water-splash stops. Pack for the hour that follows.

  • ID for anyone who plans to drive — checked as proof of age.
  • A little cash for the extras sold at the base.
  • A small towel, and shower gel if water alone is not enough.
  • A complete change of clothes, socks included.
  • A plastic bag for the dusty set on the way back.
  • Your phone in a sealed bag, if it comes at all.
  • Nothing you would mind getting dusty.

Your ID, and exactly what it is for

Anyone who plans to drive shows ID at registration, and it is checked for one thing: age. The minimum age to drive is 16. No driving licence is required, because this safari runs on a private off-road course inland from the Side coast and not on public roads. What stands between you and the main track instead is the information briefing, the safety briefing, the vehicle briefing, the practice drive and the guide's assessment on it. None of that packs into a bag; the ID does, and nothing at the base stands in for it.

Bring whatever ID you travel with. If the passport is your only document, bring it and treat it as the one thing that must not get wet: after registration it has no further job that day. The check at the base is the driver's — the adult fare starts at 11, and a child aged 6–10 rides as a passenger on the Quad Safari or the Family Buggy Safari. If a document for anyone in your party is a question at all, ask on WhatsApp before the day rather than at registration.

Cash for the base — and what happens with the fare

The cash in your bag is not for the safari. That is paid on the day of the tour, at the base: no card is taken on this site, nothing is charged when you book, and how the booking and the payment work has a page of its own.

The extras are separate and paid at the base — goggles and a bandana against the dust, food and drinks, photos and video by the base team. No price for any of them is published here, because the base sets them. Which payment methods the base takes is not something this site can confirm; ask on WhatsApp.

A towel and a dry set of clothes

A small towel and a complete change of clothes are the two things in the bag that are purely for afterwards. Changing cabins and showers at the base are included in every fare; whether anything is waiting inside them is not something this site will claim, so your own towel settles it. What is confirmed at the base, and what is not, has a page of its own.

Pack the change of clothes as a complete set, socks included. What you drive in can come back dusty, muddy or wet, and a dry shirt over damp trousers makes for a long ride home. What to wear for the driving has its own page.

Your phone, and where it is not going

Whatever you bring stays with you. No locker and no safe are on the list of facilities this site can confirm, so pack as though there is nowhere to set a bag down while you drive: small, closeable and allowed to get dusty is the whole specification.

That makes the hotel safe the right place for the passport you no longer need after registration, for jewellery and for any cash beyond the extras. A phone that does come needs a sealed bag and a pocket that closes — 18 km of dust and the water-splash stops decide that, not us — and if photographs are the only reason it is coming, cameras and the base team's photo service have a page of their own.

What you do not need to carry at all

Two groups of things get packed for nothing. The first is already in every fare, on all three safaris — the helmet, the buggy or quad, the three briefings and the practice drive, the round-trip hotel transfer, a guide on the route, the changing cabins and showers, and insurance, included where applicable under the operating policy — and what the price covers, item by item, has a page of its own.

The second group is what off-road driving quietly rules out. Goggles and a bandana sit outside both lists: not in the fare, sold at the base.

  • Flip-flops and sandals — not suitable for off-road driving.
  • White clothes. Dust decides how they look, not you.
  • Jewellery and any cash you do not need at the base.
  • A large rucksack — nothing to hold, nowhere confirmed to leave it.
  • Your own helmet. One is provided.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

How much cash should I bring to the base?

We cannot give you a figure and will not guess. The base sets the prices for goggles, a bandana, food, drinks and photos, and none is published here. Bring enough for the two or three you might want, and ask on WhatsApp about payment methods.

Do I need to pack anything extra for a child riding as a passenger?

A child aged 6–10 rides as a passenger on the Quad Safari or the Family Buggy Safari, and you pack the same as for an adult: a towel and a change of clothes, because a passenger sits through the same dust and water-splash stops. A helmet is provided. The ID at the base is the driver's, as proof of age; if you are unsure what a child should have with them, ask on WhatsApp before the day. Children under 6 cannot take part.

Can I take a backpack with me on the buggy or the quad?

Plan as though it stays with you or at the hotel: we cannot confirm any storage on the vehicle, or a locker at the base. A small bag that closes and can get dusty is the safe assumption.

What should I do with my passport during the safari?

Show it at registration if it is your only ID, then put it away sealed, in a pocket that closes — the course is dusty and there are water-splash stops. If another document shows your date of birth, the passport can stay in the hotel safe.
